Hintergrund & Einordnung

The Sd.Kfz 251/7 Pioneer Vehicle was a specialized variant of the ubiquitous Hanomag half-track, developed for the Wehrmacht's assault engineer units. Its most characteristic feature was the two detachable assault bridge ramps on the roof of the troop compartment, which could be quickly deployed to overcome trenches, destroyed bridges, or similar obstacles. Side storage compartments held inflatable boats for river crossings. The armament evolved during the war: Early versions still carried the PaK 36, which was later replaced by the more effective Panzerbüchse 41. The Pioneer Vehicle was present on all theaters of war - from the vast steppes of the Eastern Front to the ruins of Berlin in April 1945.
