Product details

Background & context

Porsche had already produced around a hundred chassis for the Tiger competition when the contract went to Henschel. Ninety-one of them became the Ferdinand in 1943, carrying the 8.8cm Pak 43/2 L/71 in a fixed superstructure. The two battalions that used it at Kursk reported high kill counts but lost vehicles to mines, breakdowns and infantry at close quarters. Rebuilt with a hull machine gun and a commander's cupola, it was renamed Elefant in 1944.

On the tabletop

The Ferdinand is a heavy tank destroyer for your German armoured platoon in Bolt Action. Its long 8.8cm Pak 43/2 can tackle heavily armoured targets at long range, and the thick frontal armour soaks up a lot of punishment. The real vehicle had no hull machine gun, so keep it from advancing alone and send Grenadiers along to guard its flanks. It fits games on the Eastern Front in 1943, Kursk above all.
