    Background & context

    From the 3rd century the Picts dominated the north of Scotland and held their own against Rome, against Northumbria and later against the Northmen, mostly not in open battle but out of forest, bog and hill country. From the 5th century the Scots of Dál Riata pushed across from Ireland onto the west coast, until in the 9th century the two realms merged into Alba. Throughout, archers covered the spear blocks and opened the fight before the ranks met.

    On the tabletop

    The 24 missile troops support the spear masses of a Pictish or Scots army from the late Roman period into the Viking Age. You build every figure with a bow or a crossbow, and the poses show shooting, reloading, at rest or the moment after the shot. In games you use them as the Picts did: from woods and rough ground, for ambushes and shooting before the spearmen attack. For Pillage they suit the supplement The Fall of Rome.
