    Background & context

    After 878 Alfred of Wessex drew the lesson from the Viking raids: he had fortified burhs built, divided the fyrd into shifts so that part of it was always under arms, and relied on mounted troops who could intercept raiders before they reached their ships. Anglo-Saxons fought on foot but rode to battle and pursued on horseback. A thegn with his retinue, a few riders and the village archers was the unit that actually fought most of the engagements of the 10th century.

    On the tabletop

    With the 4 unarmoured cavalrymen, this Saxon warband has a fast unit that is not tied to its own line: it hunts enemy missile troops, takes objectives at the edge of the table or falls on the flank of an opponent who has got bogged down against your foot soldiers. The line itself is formed by the 8 armoured infantrymen as the warlord's retinue, with the 8 unarmoured ones behind them as the second rank. You decide which of the 6 command figures becomes your warlord during assembly, and the standard bearers march with the retinue. The 6 missile troops become archers or slingers and stand in cover behind the line.
