The set adds steadfast shieldwall infantry to Saxon Dark Ages armies.

    Background & context

    Thegns were wealthier warriors of the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms and served their lords as military retainers. They were better trained and equipped than common peasant warriors, often wearing chainmail, iron helmets, and round shields with iron bosses. In a shield wall, such heavily armored foot soldiers could form a particularly resilient front. Their equipment made them effective against blows and cuts, but was less suitable for rapid skirmishing and changing battle lines.

    On the tabletop

    Six thegns in mail and iron helmets strengthen the front rank of your Anglo-Saxon shield wall in Hail Caesar, SAGA or Pillage. Mail spread the force of blows over many rings and gave these warriors a clear advantage in close combat, but it also made them heavier. So place them where the enemy attacks rather than marching them long distances. With pack A they form a larger unit of armoured warriors.
