    Product details

    Background & context

Thegns were wealthy retainers of Anglo-Saxon rulers and could be significantly better equipped than ordinary Fyrd warriors. As heavy infantry, they formed the disciplined core of a shield wall formation. Mail shirts, helmets, and larger shields underscored their higher status. This blister pack adds a compact group of experienced elite warriors to Saxon armies.

    On the tabletop

As landholders obliged to bear arms, thegns could afford mail and helmet, and these six metal figures show them with bossed round shields. In Hail Caesar, SAGA or Pillage they form the armoured centre of your shield wall, with the ceorls of the fyrd standing behind them. Men like these stood in Alfred's lines against the Danes and on Senlac Hill at Hastings in 1066. Pack B provides further poses.
