    Background & context

    Wer im 9. Jahrhundert England verteidigte, tat das im Fyrd: dem Aufgebot freier Männer, das der König oder sein Ealdorman zu den Waffen rief. Alfred von Wessex machte daraus nach dem Sieg von Edington 878 ein System aus Burgen und wechselnden Aufgeboten, das die Dänen erstmals stoppte. Im Kern stand die Gefolgschaft des Herrn, wohlhabende Thegns in Kettenhemd, dahinter Ceorls mit Speer und Schild. Diese Heere hielten bis Hastings 1066 - dort zerbrach der Schildwall an Wilhelms Reitern und Bogenschützen.

    On the tabletop

    Je 64 Thegns und Ceorls geben die Grundordnung vor. Die Thegns im Kettenhemd bilden den vorderen Schildwall, die Ceorls stehen als Fyrd daneben oder in zweiter Reihe und füllen die Breite, damit die Linie nicht zu überflügeln ist. Die 4 Hearthguard aus Metall bleiben als kleine Einheit beim Warlord, der die Division dort führt, wo der Schildwall halten muss. Für SAGA und Pillage nimmst du nur einen Ausschnitt: Warlord und Hearthguard als Kern, dazu so viele Thegns und Ceorls, wie das Szenario verlangt. Den Rest hebst du für die großen Schlachten in Hail Caesar auf.
