    Product details

    Background & context

Huscarls were professional warriors in the service of a king or earl and were socially and militarily superior to ordinary ceorls. Warlord describes them as the king's personal retinue, armed with spears, as well as round and kite shields. In Anglo-Saxon armies, they formed the more reliable, better-equipped part of the battle line. Especially in the 11th century, such elite warriors were crucial for defending the shield wall and protecting the leader.

    On the tabletop

Huscarls were the personal retinue of the Anglo-Saxon king, and these eight metal figures with spears and round or kite shields represent them in Hail Caesar, SAGA or Pillage. In the shield wall they stand where your leader fights and hold the core of the line. For Hastings in 1066 they add Harold Godwinson's most experienced men to his army. Plastic thegns and ceorls fill the ranks beside them.
