    Background & context

    Der Ceorl war der freie Mann im angelsächsischen England: kein Adliger, aber auch kein Höriger. Er zahlte seine Abgaben direkt an den König, saß im Gericht seines Bezirks und durfte Waffen tragen - und musste sie im Fyrd auch führen, wenn der Herr rief. Ohne Rüstung, mit Speer und Rundschild, füllte er die hinteren Reihen des Schildwalls, den die gepanzerten Thegns vorne hielten. Bei Maldon 991 und Hastings 1066 standen solche Männer bis zum Ende.

    On the tabletop

    The 32 Ceorls let you field the free peasant warriors of an Anglo-Saxon army for Hail Caesar, and the box also suits SAGA and Pillage. Without armour and armed with spear, sword or axe, they fill the rear ranks of the shield wall held at the front by armoured thegns. Eight figures can be built with bows and used as light shooters ahead of or beside the shield wall. Under their lord's dragon banner the Ceorls form the bulk of your fyrd.
