    Background & context

    Before the Rus became a principality they were boat crews on the rivers of eastern Europe. A band of a few dozen men was enough to sack a Slav settlement, extort tribute or intercept a caravan on its way to the Volga. The plunder, above all furs and slaves, went by way of Bulgar and Itil to Arab merchants, who paid in silver dirhams. This silver, traceable in hoards as far as Gotland, was the real driving force behind the whole movement to the east.

    On the tabletop

    The bulk of this band is the 18 unarmoured warriors. You split them into two or three light units that move quickly across the table, intercept enemy missile troops and keep the enemy busy until the rest moves up. The 12 armoured figures make up the warlord, his standard bearer and the retinue, which stays close to the leader and strikes where the light units have torn a gap. You build the 6 missile troops as either archers or slingers. This way the Rus Warband plays on speed rather than armour, in SAGA as well as in Pillage.
