The Rus set from Victrix contains 48 28mm plastic figures for 8th-9th century warriors. With armoured and unarmoured bodies, numerous head options, weapon options, command parts, and various shield shapes, you can build Rus infantry, warbands, or Varangian Guard-like representations.

Background & context

The Rus were primarily Scandinavian-influenced groups who spread along Eastern Europe's river and trade routes in the 8th and 9th centuries. They were in contact and conflict with Slavic communities, steppe peoples, and the Byzantine Empire. Some Rus warriors became known as mercenaries in Byzantine service and are often associated with the later Varangian Guard. The set reflects this blend of Norse, Slavic, and Eastern equipment.

On the tabletop

With 48 warriors, half armoured and half without armour, you field the foot soldiers of the Rus. In games they stand in a shield wall with levelled spears as at Silistria, while hand axes, swords and two-handed axes give individual fighters other weapons. Round shields, Slavic rectangular shields and helmets of Scandinavian, Slavic and Asian style show a force between the north and the steppe. Opponents are Pechenegs, Khazars or Bulgars, and in Byzantine service the figures become the Varangian Guard.
