Product details

Background & context

Simple wooden pasture fences shaped farming across much of Europe for centuries, especially where livestock grazed on open meadows. They were easy to put up and mend, since farmers could cut the timber from their own woods. For Napoleonic armies such field boundaries were a real hindrance, as cavalry had to slow down and lines lost their order. In the Second World War they still ran around the farms and pastures along which the fighting moved.

On the tabletop

Open ground usually lacks anything that gets in the way of movement. Long fence lines across a meadow force cavalry and close-order infantry to detour or lose pace while crossing. Run the fences along farm tracks to make their course visible. In World War II they mark paddocks on the edge of a village, in the gunpowder era the fields between two armies.
