Background & context

Throughout the Second World War the Royal Navy kept detaching men for duties ashore: harbour protection, prize crews, guarding jetties and dockyards. In the weeks after Dunkirk, when a German landing in southern England was seriously expected, armed sailors guarded docks and coastal batteries. Their equipment came from naval stores: dark blue uniform, 1908 pattern webbing and the Lewis machine gun, which the fleet kept longer than the army did. Later, Royal Marines and Navy Commandos in khaki took over most of these duties.

On the tabletop

Ten sailors in dark blue uniform make a Royal Navy section for a British army in Bolt Action. A Petty Officer with a submachine gun leads, the Lewis gun gives the section a light machine gun, and seven Lee-Enfield riflemen do most of the work. Three of them carry Molotov cocktails for attacking vehicles and positions at close quarters. They suit landing parties, harbour and dockyard scenarios, or the defence of southern England after Dunkirk.
