Product details

Background & context

Timber was plentiful in the colonies, so settlers usually enclosed their land with wooden fences rather than hedges or walls. The zigzag rail fence was widespread, needed no posts sunk into the ground and could be put up quickly. Fences like these crossed the land on which many battles of the War of Independence were fought.

On the tabletop

Run the fence sections along roads and field edges to give the ground some structure. A fence slows formed troops and makes them reorder their line as they cross it. Infantry standing behind it gains light cover without losing its view. This turns open meadows into lines worth fighting over.
