Background & context

France built the Char léger Modèle 1935 R as a support tank for the infantry: thick armour, a leisurely pace and a one-man turret in which the commander had to load, aim and command all at once. The short 37 mm SA18 was of little use against tanks, so from spring 1940 the longer SA38 followed, too late for the campaign. Around 1,685 vehicles built still made it the most numerous French tank, and after the armistice many of them rolled on under German and Romanian flags.

On the tabletop

The Renault R35 is the light support tank of the French infantry in the 1940 campaign and also the most common French tank of the time. It moves at a slow pace alongside the foot soldiers and its thick armour lets it take a fair amount of punishment, but the short SA18 does little against tanks. With the late turret and the long SA38 you show the improved vehicles. As an export it served in Poland, Romania, Turkey and Yugoslavia, and captured examples ran with German troops.
