Product details

Background & context

Prussia was famous for its infantry, yet Napoleon expressly warned his generals early on about the Prussian cavalry. The uhlans fell between two stools: on paper light cavalry for reconnaissance and skirmishing, in practice often in the middle of the main battle line. Their nine-foot lance reached further than any bayonet and had its effect by mere appearance alone. At Ligny in 1815 it was uhlans who pulled the fallen Blücher out of the fray.

On the tabletop

Prussia's uhlans did two jobs: as light cavalry they skirmished, and in pitched battles they rode in the main line alongside dragoons and cuirassiers. In Black Powder you can therefore post the twelve figures, officer and bugler included, on a wing or in the line of your heavier cavalry. Their nine-foot lance outreaches any bayonet. At Ligny in 1815 it was uhlans who rescued the unhorsed Blücher, which makes a good scenario of its own.
