Background & context

Unlike the cannon, the howitzer did not fire flat but lobbed its charge onto the target in a high arc. That made it dangerous to anything standing behind a rise, in a village or in a dense column. Prussian batteries therefore always carried a few howitzers alongside the six- and twelve-pounders in order to reach exactly those targets. The price was a far less dependable effect, for what was hit came down to the experience and luck of the crew.

On the tabletop

You can build this Prussian foot artillery piece as either a 7-inch or a 10-inch howitzer, and four gunners are included. Howitzers lobbed explosive shells over the heads of their own troops into the midst of the enemy. On the tabletop it hits units behind rises, in villages or in dense columns. Since foot artillery took up position before the battle, in Black Powder you place it at the start where it has a good view, next to the cannon of your battery.
