Background & context

The mounted Landwehr was raised in 1813 from the same levy as the foot troops, except that horses, saddles and lances had to be scraped together by the provinces. They wore the dark blue Litewka with collar and cuffs in the provincial colour, with a field cap or shako, often bearing a white cross. The pennons on the lances were a colourful mix at first and only became uniformly black and white by the Waterloo campaign. There the Landwehr provided around forty per cent of Blücher's cavalry.

On the tabletop

The mounted Landwehr was Prussia's militia cavalry, raised in 1813 and grown to more than thirty regiments by the Hundred Days. In Black Powder the twelve riders, officer and bugler included, form a unit that covers a flank and rides down enemies who have already begun to waver. At Waterloo about 40 per cent of Blücher's cavalry came from the Landwehr, so several units are well justified. For the Waterloo campaign, paint the lance pennons black and white.
