Background & context

The French Chassepot shot further and faster than the Prussian Dreyse, and that changed the form of combat. Anyone who attacked in close-order line in 1870 came under fire at long range and lost men before their own shot could even reach. Prussian companies therefore broke up more and more often into open swarms, used ditches, hedges and field boundaries, and left the decision to their superior artillery.

On the tabletop

The skirmish frames in this box let you represent Prussian companies of 1870/71 breaking up into open swarms and using ditches, hedges and field edges as cover. Two frames of advancing figures and a command frame supply the leadership and a small formed element. As the frames match those of the advancing set, the two boxes combine into a battalion with line and skirmishers. Wounded figures as well as Pickelhauben, field caps and Landwehr shakos are included.
