Background & context

Das preußische Zündnadelgewehr war 1866 gegen Österreich noch eine Sensation gewesen, 1870 gegen das französische Chassepot aber deutlich unterlegen: kürzere Reichweite, undichter Verschluss. Wer trotzdem vorwärts musste, tat das nicht mehr in geschlossener Reihe, sondern sprungweise, von Feldrain zu Mauer. Diese aufgelockerte Gefechtsweise setzte sich nach 1871 in ganz Europa durch und nahm vorweg, wie ab 1914 gekämpft wurde.

On the tabletop

The focus of this box is open order: most of the 39 Prussians are taking cover, loading or firing individually. They represent the loose fighting style in which Prussian companies moved forward in rushes from field edge to wall, because their needle gun was outranged by the Chassepot. Two advancing frames and a command frame provide a formed core, and four head options up to the Landwehr shako define the troops.
