Background & context

In 1870 Prussia mobilised faster than any opponent: railway timetables, a well-drilled reservist system and a general staff that had worked out the deployment routes in advance. On the battlefield the infantry at first still advanced in dense platoons and paid a bitter price for it at Mars-la-Tour and Gravelotte. After only a few weeks of war the Prussian attack looked markedly different from the one in the regulations.

On the tabletop

The 39 Prussians of 1870/71 are mostly advancing, while ten skirmishers fire and load ahead of the front and a command frame leads the unit. Pickelhauben of the 1860 and 1867 patterns, field caps or Landwehr shakos let you represent line, reserve or Landwehr troops. You advance in dense formations against French positions as at Mars-la-Tour and Gravelotte, and the included wounded show what that cost. French line infantry with the Chassepot makes the opponent.
