Product details

Background & context

The husaria began as light cavalry on the Balkan pattern and grew in the 17th century into the heaviest shock arm in Europe. It was carried by the szlachta: every towarzysz put his retinue together himself and paid for armour, horse and wings out of his own pocket. The overlong kopia shattered on impact, and after that the fight went on with koncerz and sabre. Kircholm in 1605 and the ride from the Kahlenberg before Vienna in 1683 sealed their reputation for good.

On the tabletop

Eight winged hussars with officer, standard bearer and musician, plus a flag sheet and bases, form a complete hussar unit for Pike & Shotte. As heavy shock cavalry they ride the decisive charge against an enemy formation with their very long lances. The wings on their backs were meant to make that charge even more frightening. For Kircholm 1605 or the relief of Vienna in 1683 the unit forms the core of your Polish cavalry.
