    Description

    In September 1939 this tankette was the backbone of the Polish armoured force: just under three tonnes of sheet metal against the German Panzer divisions. A model with a story for Early War lists off the beaten track.

    Background & context

    Poland bought a handful of Carden-Loyd tankettes in 1929 and developed the TK series from them; the TKS was its final stage of development, with thicker armour and a more powerful engine. Around 260 were in the field in 1939, most of them armed with nothing more than a machine gun. A few dozen had a 20mm cannon fitted shortly before the war began, and with it they did in fact knock out German tanks during the campaign.

    On the tabletop

    The TKS was the final development of the Polish TK tankettes, derived from the British Carden-Loyd. In September 1939 the tankettes served mainly for reconnaissance, and their machine gun was unpleasant for advancing light German troops, while some received a long 20 mm cannon with a useful anti-tank capability. In Bolt Action you use them en masse against infantry, armoured cars and light tanks, relying on their low silhouette and speed. They cannot take on anything heavier.
