Product details

Background & context

Poland and Lithuania liked to fill out their foot with hired companies from the German lands: men drilled in the western style who brought the long pike with them. In the east, though, the weapon was worth less than on the Rhine: against the fast, widely ranging cavalry of the Tatars and Ottomans a rigid pike block achieved little. Polish commanders therefore preferred shot, who kept the way clear for their own horsemen. On the table such a block is a dependable anchor all the same.

On the tabletop

Eight hired pikemen give your Polish-Lithuanian army a Western-style pike block in Pike & Shotte. Such mercenaries mostly came from the German states, as the Commonwealth used its own infantry mainly to support the cavalry. Against the fast cavalry of Tatars and Ottomans pikes achieved little. On the table, however, the block serves as a solid anchor for your line and stands out visibly from the rest of the army.
