Description

Sabres out, reins short: three riders of the light Commonwealth cavalry on the attack. If you need Cossacks for your army, take the same figures; in the east the term meant both sides of the front anyway.

Product details

Background & context

The Polish sabre was no ornament but the working tool of an entire military culture. The szabla, with its slightly curved blade and closed knuckle guard, developed from Hungarian and Ottoman models and in the 17th century became the standard weapon from the ordinary horseman to the magnate. It was wielded from the wrist, in passing, against unprotected arms and necks. Against a closed formation that helped little; against a wavering one it was devastating.

On the tabletop

Sabres drawn, these three light horsemen of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth ride into the attack. Their equipment was lightened on the eastern pattern to keep them fast and agile. In Pike & Shotte you send them against units that are already wavering and use them to chase down fleeing enemies, since the sabre achieves little against a closed formation. Combined with the musket-armed riders they form a mixed unit, which can also serve as Cossacks.
