Product details

Background & context

In the 17th century the firearm moved into the saddle for good. Where the Commonwealth's light cavalry had once made do with bow and battleaxe, it now carried carbines and pistols, handy enough to be loaded and fired from horseback. It was seldom fit for the great decision: they shot at outposts, disrupted supplies and covered their own side's retreat. In the wide spaces between the Vistula and the Dnieper, a force that could shoot and vanish at once was often more useful than any armoured cavalry.

On the tabletop

By the 17th century the Commonwealth's light cavalry increasingly carried firearms alongside their blades. In Pike & Shotte you use these three riders with muskets as mobile shooters that fire on outposts and flanks and slip away before a counter-attack. They can also cover the withdrawal of your other troops. With the sabre-armed riders and the command you build a mixed unit of levy cavalry, which can also stand in for Cossacks.
