Product details

Background & context

The heavy matchlock musket of the early 17th century was a tool for practised hands: powder from the bandolier, ball, ramrod, priming powder, adjust the match, and all of it while someone opposite was doing the same. That is why men were drilled in ranks and relieved one another, rank by rank. In the Commonwealth this western school arrived late, by way of hired officers and German companies. Set the figures up in several ranks and you get exactly this rhythm on the table.

On the tabletop

Eight musketeers reloading fill the rear ranks of your later Polish-Lithuanian infantry in Pike & Shotte. Loading the heavy matchlock musket took practised hands and time, so the ranks fired in turn while the others reloaded. Together with the figures in firing poses, your unit shows exactly this rotation. The command group and mercenary pikemen from the same range complete the regiment.
