Product details

Background & context

The Commonwealth divided its army into national and foreign contingents, and its own infantry had the thankless reputation of the two. In the late 16th century it was raised from the royal estates: peasants who were given land for their service and took the field in return. Their fighting value was middling, their numbers at least dependable; they supplemented the experienced haiduks and held earthworks, wagon forts and siege lines. In Poland the cavalry won the glory, and these men won the ground.

On the tabletop

A leader, a flag bearer, a musician and a further infantryman form the command group of a unit of later Polish-Lithuanian infantry for Pike & Shotte. From the late 16th century this infantry was raised from peasants on the royal estates and supported the hajduks in the field. With flag and musician at its head, the unit is easy to spot on the table. The musketeers in firing and reloading poses from the same range complete it.
