    Background & context

    Die 1. Polnische Selbständige Fallschirmbrigade wurde in Schottland aufgestellt, mit dem erklärten Ziel, eines Tages über Polen abzuspringen. Stattdessen setzte man sie im September 1944 bei Driel ab, gegenüber dem eingeschlossenen britischen Brückenkopf von Arnheim. Nur ein Bruchteil der Brigade kam über den Rhein, und Brigadegeneral Sosabowski wurde anschließend zum Sündenbock des gescheiterten Unternehmens gemacht.
