Background & context

Pike & Shotte deals with 17th-century mass battles, where pikes, muskets, and cavalry worked together. The set is intended as an introduction to this era and offers both rules and two small contingents of troops. The manufacturer explicitly mentions Royalists, Parliamentarians, and other actors of the Thirty Years' War as possible contexts for use.

On the tabletop

This box gives you two small armies for Pike & Shotte, each with a pike block and musketeers in the centre. To do this, you split the 58 infantrymen with pike and musket including command, the 12 cavalrymen for the wings and the 12 infantrymen with firelocks between you. Because Royalists and Parliamentarians were equipped the same way, the paint scheme alone decides who fights for King and who for Parliament, and the same figures also take the table in the Thirty Years' War. Movement, volleys and melee of the battalias are covered in the 208-page rulebook. Unit bases are not included; you will need those separately for the regiments.
