Hintergrund & Einordnung

The capture of the Pegasus Bridge (Bénouville Bridge) on the night of June 5th-6th, 1944, was the first Allied action of the Normandy landings. D Company of the 2nd Battalion Oxfordshire & Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, under Major John Howard, landed directly at the bridgehead with gliders - a superb feat of piloting by Staff Sergeant James Wallwork. The German defenders of the 716th Infantry Division - a static coastal defense unit with partially weak equipment, supplemented by Eastern Front POWs and inexperienced young soldiers - were caught off guard by the surprise attack. After a brief, intense firefight, the bridge was secured. Codewords: "Ham" (canal bridge captured) and "Jam" (river bridge captured). Lord Lovat with his Commandos and his personal piper Bill Millin relieved the bridge later that day. The Caen Canal Bridge was renamed "Pegasus Bridge" by the local population in recognition of the Pegasus emblem of the 6th Airborne Division. The operation is considered a prime example of precisely planned airborne and commando operations.
