Background & context

In 1181 Henry II laid down in the Assize of Arms that every free man in England had to keep weapons ready according to his wealth, from a mail shirt down to a mere lance with an iron cap. Out of this grew the levy: villagers called together by the sheriff or their lord in time of war. They were hardly trained, but they knew bow and sling from hunting, and they brought flails and sickles with them from the farm. At sieges they dug, in battle they stood at the back, and when the front broke they were the first to run.

On the tabletop

The two frames build up to 24 men of the levy, armed with spear, bow, sling, axe, sword, club or, as a last resort, scythes and other farm tools. They add numbers to your retinue, hold a line with spears or shoot at the enemy from the second rank. Against knights and serjeants they rarely last long, but they cost you little. The parts fit the other boxes in the range, and bases are included.
