Background & context

Die Arsakiden regierten von der Mitte des 3. Jahrhunderts v. Chr. bis 224 n. Chr. über Iran und Mesopotamien und waren Roms unbequemster Nachbar im Osten. Ihr Heer bestand kaum aus Fußvolk: Adelige Kataphrakte bildeten die Faust, freie und verpflichtete Reiter den Bogenschwarm drumherum. Der Parthische Schuss, nach hinten gefeuert im scheinbaren Rückzug, war kein Trick, sondern Ausbildung. 53 v. Chr. bei Carrhae rieb diese Kombination das Heer des Crassus auf.

On the tabletop

Shoot, wheel away and come back: these three Parthian horse archers reinforce an existing unit in Hail Caesar. The backward shot during an apparent retreat was part of their training and made them hard for infantry to pin down. The Arsacid army had hardly any foot soldiers; noble cataphracts formed its core while the horse archers swarmed around the enemy. For games against Rome in the east you place them alongside your armoured horsemen.
