Das Partherreich lebte vom Pferd. Seine Heere kannten kaum schwere Fußtruppen, dafür zwei Waffen, die einander ergänzten: leichte Bogenreiter, die im Galopp schossen und sich der Entscheidung entzogen, und gepanzerte Kataphrakte für den Stoß. Bei Carrhae 53 v. Chr. zerrieb Surena auf diese Weise sieben römische Legionen. Der Parthenschuss über die Kruppe des davonpreschenden Pferdes wurde sprichwörtlich. Wer solche Verbände führte, ritt mit ihnen - abgesessene Befehlsstände gab es nicht.

On the tabletop

A Parthian cavalry wing needs leadership, and these three mounted command figures in metal provide it. In Hail Caesar or Clash of Spears you place them at the head of your horse archers, who shoot at the gallop and avoid close combat. Parthian armies consisted mainly of such horse archers and armoured cataphracts. With this combination Surena defeated seven Roman legions at Carrhae in 53 BC.
