Background & context

The Panzer Lehr Division was formed at the beginning of 1944 from the training and demonstration units of the German armoured troops schools, in other words from instructors who had themselves already fought on the Eastern Front, in North Africa and in Sicily. Under Fritz Bayerlein it received the best equipment the Wehrmacht could still muster at the time and was regarded as a fully motorised elite formation. In Normandy it was ground down within weeks under Allied carpet bombing. The remnants went on fighting in the Ardennes and in the Ruhr Pocket until it was all over in April 1945.

On the tabletop

The up to 30 grenadiers represent the Panzer Lehr Division, which fought in France from 1944 and surrendered in April 1945. With carbines, MP 40s and MG 42s you build sections for the firefight, while Panzerfausts give them a weapon against Allied tanks. The extra arms with tools and jerrycans turn some figures into dismounted tank crews standing by a broken-down vehicle. That way the infantry accompanies your German tanks in Normandy.
