Background & context

The Panzer II was intended as a stopgap until enough Panzer III and IV came out of the factories, and then became the numerical backbone of the panzer divisions in Poland and France. Its 2cm gun was enough against infantry and light vehicles, but against a Matilda or an S35 it was useless. From 1941 it was shunted off into reconnaissance, where speed counted for more than armour. The hull stayed in the war nonetheless: later the Marder and the Wespe ran on it.

On the tabletop

With three Panzer IIs you field a complete German armoured platoon for Bolt Action, each tank in its own box with waterslide decals and instructions. Together the three 2 cm guns pin down enemy infantry and hunt light vehicles, while heavily armoured opponents such as the Matilda or S35 are best given a wide berth. The platoon suits the campaigns in Poland and France, North Africa and the opening of the war in the East. From 1941 the Panzer II was increasingly used for reconnaissance, and the platoon works for that too.
