Product details

Background & context

The Sipahis rode for land rather than pay: anyone granted a timar had to appear on campaign in return with horse, armour and retinue. That made them the most numerous arm of the Ottoman army, and a very mobile one too. Heavy cavalry on the western pattern was never their business; they came in swarms, stabbed at unprotected points and were gone again before the enemy had sorted himself out. At court there were also the Kapikulu Sipahis, the Sultan's household cavalry.

On the tabletop

Eight sipahis with officer, standard bearer and musician make a complete cavalry unit for your Ottoman army in Pike & Shotte. The brass spears are tougher than cast lances. In play you ride them against isolated units or into a wavering formation and then pull them back behind your infantry before the enemy can regroup. Shields and mail protect them, but they are not heavy cavalry in the western sense.
