Background & context

Das Janitscharenkorps war eine stehende Truppe in einer Zeit, in der Europa jede Kampagne neu anwarb. Rekrutiert über die Knabenlese, kaserniert und laufend geübt, nahm es Handfeuerwaffen früher an als die meisten westlichen Heere. Bei Mohács 1526 und vor Wien 1529 stand diese Feuerkraft in geordneten Reihen hinter Wagenburg und Grabenwerk und blieb bis weit ins 17. Jahrhundert das Rückgrat jeder osmanischen Feldarmee.

On the tabletop

Five Janissaries advancing with arquebuses levelled form a shot division for your Ottoman army in Pike & Shotte. The standing corps adopted firearms earlier than most Western armies, because a force that trained all year round could more easily switch to a new weapon. You use the division to weaken the enemy at range before your melee troops attack. Mohács in 1526 and the siege of Vienna in 1529 are fitting settings.
