Product details

Background & context

The Janissaries were a standing army when Europe was still hiring mercenaries. From 1383 the Sultan took boys from Christian families in the Balkans, had them convert to Islam and raised them as soldiers in barracks: the devsirme. The result was a force that wore uniform, marched to music and took to firearms early. Its units were called ortas and carried kitchen ranks, the commander being the soup maker. When the corps had grown too powerful, Mahmud II dissolved it in blood in 1826.

On the tabletop

With 24 Janissaries you field the elite infantry of the Ottoman Empire in Pike & Shotte: twelve with sword and shield including an officer, standard bearer, drummer and sergeant, plus twelve arquebusiers with their own officer. You can lead both halves as one unit or deploy them separately, the shooters for the firefight and the swordsmen for the attack. As a standing force equipped with firearms early on, they form the core of your Ottoman army.
