    Background & context

    The Normans were descendants of Scandinavian settlers in Northern France and developed a highly equestrian warrior culture in the 11th century. In 1066, Duke William of Normandy led his army to England and achieved a decisive victory over Harold Godwinson at Hastings on October 14th. Contemporary depictions and later analyses emphasize the importance of Norman cavalry against Anglo-Saxon infantry. A mounted command squad with a musician fits into this context because signals and leadership were central to coordinated cavalry charges.

    On the tabletop

    Among the three unarmoured riders of this command is a musician with a horn who sounds the charge. In Hail Caesar, SAGA or Pillage you place the group at the head of your light Norman horsemen, who attack on the flanks and harass unprotected archers. Instead of mail the men carry large shields, which deflect blows and missiles long enough for the spears to come into play.
