    Product details

    Background & context

The Normans were descendants of Scandinavian settlers in Northern France and developed a highly equestrian warrior culture in the 11th century. Their knights combined mobility, chainmail, shields, and lances to form an effective heavy cavalry. Especially around the time of the Norman conquest of England in 1066, the mounted component became a defining element of Norman armies. Such knights could tie down, break through, or force enemy lines to retreat through repeated attacks.

    On the tabletop

Armed with lance, spear and sword, these four mounted knights reinforce the Norman cavalry in Hail Caesar, SAGA or Pillage. They are your shock troops for attacking a weakened line. At Hastings in 1066 such knights charged the Anglo-Saxon shield wall again and again until a feigned flight opened its ranks. Mail, nasal helmet and kite shield match the knights on the Bayeux Tapestry.
