    Background & context

    The Normans were descended from Scandinavian settlers to whom the West Frankish king ceded the land around Rouen in 911. Within a few generations they spoke French and fielded one of the most effective war machines in Europe. The famous cavalry tends to make people forget that at Hastings it was foot soldiers and archers who were sent against the English shield wall first. The same contingents later went to southern Italy, Sicily and on the First Crusade.

    On the tabletop

    The 60 figures give you Norman foot soldiers for several units, with the two command frames providing their leaders. On the table these men form up in a close rank ahead of your knights and, as at Hastings, carry the first assault against an enemy shield wall. You mix armoured and unarmoured bodies freely, creating well-equipped retainers alongside more simply equipped warriors. The same force can follow you to southern Italy, Sicily or on the First Crusade.
