    Hintergrund & Einordnung

    The French line infantry formed the backbone of the Napoleonic army and was present in almost every European theater of war. In the later phase of the war, from 1812 onwards, the resilience of these troops became particularly evident: despite increasing exhaustion and dwindling resources, the regiments largely maintained their tactical discipline. The greatcoats typical for this period were worn more frequently in field service than the elaborate parade uniform and are characteristic of the troops' appearance in the final years of the war. The unit exemplifies the transition from a triumphant fighting force to an army that fought under immense pressure.
