Background & context

Alongside its line regiments France maintained separate light regiments, the légère, whose companies were called carabiniers, chasseurs and voltigeurs. They were trained to fight in open order: to fan out ahead of their own line, bring officers and gun crews under fire and screen the deployment of the main body. From 1812 the difference from the line infantry shrank, because losses and hasty levies levelled out the training, but the reputation remained. At Waterloo, légère battalions fought in d'Erlon's corps in the assault on La Haye Sainte.

On the tabletop

Light infantry of 1812 to 1815 fights in open order ahead of its own line. In Black Powder you field the 24 plastic figures as a battalion or as skirmishers in front of your columns, with two officers, a drummer and a standard bearer in metal as the command. Out there they target enemy gun crews and officers and screen the deployment of your main body. For Waterloo they fit into d'Erlon's corps in the assault on La Haye Sainte.
