Background & context

In 1815 Napoleon's Armée du Nord had been raised from nothing in a few weeks. Its core consisted of veterans returning from captivity and half-pay after the first abdication: experienced, but politically divided and distrustful of their own officers. Tactically the familiar interplay remained: voltigeurs opened in open order, the line battalions followed in dense column, and lancers stood ready as soon as a formation began to waver. The artillery was strong, but struggled to get into position on the sodden ground of 18 June.

On the tabletop

The 28 light infantrymen work ahead of the line as voltigeurs, ideally as a battalion of their own in open order that takes the enemy's first volley. The 84 line infantrymen make three battalions of exactly the same strength and follow in column. The 12 line lancers wait as a cavalry regiment behind one flank and break in wherever an enemy unit is shaken. Place the 6-pounder with its crew in the centre, and the mounted officer leads the whole force. That is six units under one commander, a full Black Powder brigade of all three arms.
