Product details

Background & context

In spring 1809 Marshal Soult held Porto and northern Portugal. In May Wellesley advanced north from Coimbra, pushed back the French outposts at Grijo and on 12 May crossed the Douro in a handful of boats. Soult was caught by surprise and had to abandon the city in haste. On his retreat through the mountains into Galicia he left guns and baggage behind.

On the tabletop

The Douro campaign of 1809 offers a compact Black Powder action: at Grijo the butchers faced the British 3rd Battalion of Detachments. Set up a hill with a village beside the road to Porto, let Rochebaron's men hold the heights with Berthet among them, and have the British veterans attack from the south. Berthet adds one more man to the French side.
