Product details

Background & context

The French lancer regiments were raised in 1811 on Napoleon's express orders, after Polish uhlans had shown him what the long thrusting weapon could do. Six regiments were formed from dragoon units, two more from the Polish lancers of the Vistula Legion. Their armament remained unusually versatile: lance for the charge, sabre for the melee, and carbines as well for the flankers. On the field of Waterloo they were among the units that pressed Wellington's squares most stubbornly.

On the tabletop

After Wagram in 1809 Napoleon had regiments of lancers raised, dressed in green or blue, with brass helmets and lances bearing red and white pennants. The box contains twelve plastic riders plus a metal officer, bugler and eagle bearer arm, so you can field the unit with or without a command group. Lancers could fight in the line of battle, but mostly they scouted and skirmished. In Black Powder they attack skirmishers and shaken units.
