Napoleon's Guard Horse Artillery was considered the elite among the Empire's artillerymen - equipped with the best horses and cannoneers the Empire had to offer. From 1805 onwards, the light 6-pounder cannon was the standard for light batteries and was handled with deadly precision by these highly specialized crews. This metal model depicts a complete gun crew with its cannon.

Background & context

Reitende Batterien setzte man dort ein, wo Tempo zählte: an der Spitze eines Vorstoßes, an einer bedrohten Flanke oder als Reserve, die binnen Minuten irgendwo im Feld auftauchte. Der Sechspfünder passte dazu, weil Rohr und Protze leicht genug für den ständigen Stellungswechsel blieben. Die Kanoniere der Garde galten europaweit als Maßstab, und andere Armeen bauten ihre eigene Reitartillerie nach französischem Muster auf. Im Feldzug von 1815 stand die Waffengattung bei Ligny und Waterloo noch einmal geschlossen im Feld.

On the tabletop

The horse artillery of the Imperial Guard was regarded as the elite of the French artillery, and this 6-pounder with four gunners represents one of its guns. Six cannon and two 5.5-inch howitzers usually made up a battery; the howitzer is available as a separate set. In Black Powder you use the gun as a fast reserve that unlimbers on a threatened flank or at the head of an attack. Ligny and Waterloo in 1815 are fitting battles.
