    Die Konfessionskriege des 16. und frühen 17. Jahrhunderts wurden zu großen Teilen von angeworbenen Berufssoldaten ausgetragen. Ein berittener Hauptmann stand dabei zwischen Auftraggeber und Truppe: Er warb die Männer an, verhandelte den Sold, haftete für Disziplin und führte seine Kompanie im Feld. Wechselte der Geldgeber, wechselte oft auch die Seite. Diese Söldnerführer verbinden die Kriegführung der Renaissance mit den Berufsheeren des Dreißigjährigen Kriegs.

    On the tabletop

    This unnamed mounted mercenary captain leads your hired troops of the Wars of Religion in Pike & Shotte, and you give him his name and role yourself. On the table you use him as the commander of a brigade or company. Historically such a captain stood between employer and troops: he recruited, negotiated pay and answered for discipline, and when the paymaster changed he often changed sides too. That suits scenarios from the 16th century to the Thirty Years War.
