Description

Twelve knights on horseback, the horses in heraldic caparisons, 21 heads to choose from and lances, swords, axes and maces on the frames. The tournament lances are included as well, in case it is to be a joust for once instead of a battle.

Background & context

The destrier, the warhorse, cost as much as a small village, and the heraldic caparison over it came into fashion around 1200, first as protection against sun and arrows, then as the rider's advertising hoarding. The real weapon was the couched lance: the impact of twelve knights at the gallop tore open more than one 13th-century battle line. It was practised in the tournament, which at that time was not yet a courtly spectacle but a mass fight over horses and ransom. William Marshal made his fortune in his youth by exactly that.

On the tabletop

Twelve knights on horses in heraldic caparisons are the striking power of your retinue between 1150 and 1320. With couched lances they deliver the decisive charge, while sword, axe and mace take over in the melee that follows. The 21 heads and interchangeable arms, which also fit the foot knights of the same range, give every knight his own look. Jousting lances are included too, so you can stage a tournament instead of a battle.
